Devin Finley

Devin was born into a middle class family in Michigan. Being an only child, his parents focused on him a lot and pushed him to succeed. He got excellent grades in school and even though he was a bit of a handful when he reached high school, he was accepted into a medical program at the age of 18. He exceled at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine despite partying just as much as he studied and was accepted into a medical residency program at a hospital with a good reputation. He took his work very seriously but he also continued drinking.

He applied to several prestigious hospitals but due to having a bit of a reputation of being difficult to control, he ended up at a small, unimportant local hospital in a very small town in Pennsylvania. He worked there day and night. The hospital was his life and despite the fact it was clear to the administration that he drank too much, he was producing money for the hospital so they turned a blind eye.

He had plans to go home to Michigan for Christmas but canceled at the last minute due to work. He decided to go home for New Years instead. His mother gave him her usual understanding reply while his father didn’t say a word – he knew they were both disappointed, but thought he’d make it up to them at New Years with several large gifts.

Unfortunately, the world went to hell before he made it home. A tidal wave knocked the eastern shore line for a loop, causing the few survivors from New Jersey and Maryland to retreat westward. An earthquake shattered the calm of Northern Pennsylvania – while the epicenter was further west, the damage was astronomical. The hospital was overcrowded and then female patients began to die and with them, the bulk of the nurses. The damage and the mysterious illness were overwhelming. Devin worked long hours and used booze to deal with the situation. He could only think of his parents and that last disappointing phone call.

As the body count rose, Devin collapsed and woke up hours later in a hospital bed hooked to an IV. The Chief at the hospital wanted to admit 'for nerves', which Devin considered highly ironic for a neurologist. When the Chief was obtaining medication, Devin unhooked himself and left – he had made up his mind that despite being unable to reach his parents, he was going to find them.
